"Christmas Star"

Being that it is December...this photo of a Poinsettia, named Christmas Star, is a fitting image. This flower was photographed from my late grandmothers plant the winter after her passing and my aunt had taken care of it in her greenhouse. This image reminds my of her and I wish she was still here.

"Blue Passion Flower 3"

This image is one view of the Blue Passion Flower to highlight the intense golden yellow of it's pollen on the stamens. Compare with the "Blue Passion Flower 2" in the older posts.

"African Aloe 4"

This is a closeup of the African Aloe blossoms. Note how they are similar to North American Aloes, but more colorful and more abundant along the stem. This portrait is available for custom printing up to 24x30 inches.

"Antelope Horns"

This is an close up image of the wildflower "Antelope Horns". It is also known as "Green Milkweed" and grows in pastures throughout the countryside. It is easily spotted from a distance because of it's single stalk and ball of blossoms that form on top of that stalk.

"Calla Lily 1"

My brother-in-law, John the landscaper, brought this plant to me to photograph. I tried to present it as a classic view of the flower. This image was captured in the studio utilizing strong side lighting to emphasize it's bold shape while maintaining it's subtle pastel color shades.

"Calla Lily 2"

This is a close up of the Calla Lily 1. I always try to find a unique angle to every flower I photograph. Each flower will present a different view when I sit down and study it's individual architecture. I then visualize how I want the image to look and photograph it to get that visualization.

"Dixie Blue Iris"

The first floral image I took was this Dixie Blue Iris that grew wild in my front yard in Bryan, Texas. I showed it to a few friends and they convinced me to pursue more flowers to photograph. So, this is the image that started it all. It is also considered to be a Texas wildflower. This flower is very aromatic, but not in a good sense...kind of stinks, actually. I picked a bouquet once and brought them into the house and had to move them outside soon thereafter.

"African Aloe 2"

This is one of four shots that I have of some African Aloes. These are very interesting because their blooms are very similar to the native aloe we find around Texas. The African Aloe branching is more compact and the blooms are more colorful. These images were taken at the Antique Rose Emporium in San Antonio.

"Day Lily"

I met this guy in College Station that kept going on and on about his beautiful Day Lilies until I finally went to his house to get some to photograph. When I got there I was disappointed that he had no blooms. There were a few with pods that appeared like they were ready to open soon. I took those home and placed in water. The next day I awoke to this. Just incredible.

"Bluebonnets"

Everyone loves Bluebonnets and, of course, I had to have an image of Bluebonnets. The problem was that I didn't want the regular run-of-the-mill type field shot that everyone has seen. Glaring at a Bluebonnet cluster I finally saw what I was looking for...a close up mid section. Each blossom starts to take on a personality with a big nose, a high brow and a goatee. It is fun to let your imagination go looking at macro floral photography. This image was featured in my Texas Highways article, April 2009.

"OK I'm Back"

Sorry for not updating recently.  I had a computer problem and I have recovered.  I lost a 1TB hard drive and luckily...I have redundantly backed up my business files and photos.  Unfortunately, I did lose all my mp3 files, movies, personal family photos and some financial documents.  Let my demise be your lesson...BACK UP YOUR IMPORTANT FILES, RELIGIOUSLY!!!

This was a public service announcement.

"Pincushion Protea 1"

This is another flower that was presented to me by my friend James. It is very interesting and a challenge to make sure that the depth of field is just right. The Pincushion Protea lasts for about a week when cut and placed in water...much longer than most plants or flowers.

"Nightblooming Cereus 3"

My mom gave us a cactus about a year ago that resembled Saguaro and it has grown quite a bit since then. I found out that this cactus is in the Cereus family which also includes Saguaro. The cactus has flowers that only open for one night and they are very large (about 8 inches) in diameter. Our Cereus is about 3 feet tall, but they can grow up to 15 feet.

"Dwarf Red Coneflower 2"

The Dwarf Red Coneflower or Mexican Hat is a native wildflower of Texas. Everyone sees and recognizes this flower. I have noticed there are 3 or 4 varieties even in Central Texas, but I captured this one and I love the red tones.

"Blue Passion Flower 2"

Again, some of my favorite flowers are Passion Flowers. This variety is considered to be a Texas wildflower and grows quite aggressively if left alone. I have heard from some owners that they are almost impossible to get rid of, if that is your intent. This image was featured in my Texas Highways article, April 2009. My most common comment about this image is that it looks alien in nature.

"Day Lillies"

When I lived in Bryan I had these Day Lillies that grew wild in my backyard. During the late spring and summer I would get a few blooms a week from them. They would open when the sun would illuminate them in the morning, progress in developement throughout late morning and noon and then would start deteriorating throughout the afternoon. A true day lily. I took this image by rushing home at noon and capturing the image during the flower's prime.

"Clover"

This image is another one of my "Micro Flowers" series that I am working on. Again, a very small flower (1/4" in diameter) that we do not normally notice. This plant was also found in my backyard.
The image is not on my website yet, but you can email me if interested.

"Drummond's Wild Petunia"

This flower is also called a "Mexican Petunia" and is a very colorful wildflower. The deep purple coloration is quite attractive along with the almost crepe paper type texture of the petals. I believe this image was captured in Williamson County, Texas during the late spring months.

"Icelandic Poppy 2"

This is a close-up image of the Icelandic Poppy that my friend James brought me. I have started getting super close to my subjects and I like what I have been capturing. This is just a portion of the flower that seemed interesting and composed well.

"Cotton Boll 1"

Once in a while I will photograph some non-floral subjects because of their texture, color or architecture. This image is of a cotton boll that I noticed in a cotton field near Taylor, Texas. It is not the flower, it is the seed pod created by pollination of the flower.

"Paper Whites"

This image was taken in very early spring of Paper Whites. These flowers tend to be some of the first bloomers of the season and these...were found at my friend Deanna's house. I used a skylight as my main source of illumination for this photograph.

"Indian Paintbrush"

This image was published by Texas Highways back in April of 2008 and was placed inside the back cover. I took this image while living in Bryan and had paid a lot of attention to fresh growth along its stem. What I had found was that a good rainy season promoted more fresh growth from top to bottom of the plant. A dry season will produce skimpy plants with only the tops being new or fresh growth. The intense red coloration is actually part of the leaf structure and the actual flowers are the small pink areas near the leaves.

"Passion Flower Incarnata"

Passiflora or Passion Flowers have always intrigued me. Their colors and floral architecture are just fabulous. This variety grows somewhat wild in central Texas and they have always demonstrated a certain "character" in their presentation to the world.

"Red Hibiscus Posterior"

I just love to photograph Hibiscus. They seem to always incorporate bright colors and interesting textures. This particular plant was brought to me by my brother-in-law, John. He is a professional landscaper and a great asset to my photography. This image is the back side of a nice Hibiscus bloom and shows off the exquisite cathedral type arches of the bloom with the deep rivulets of it's textured petals.
